Your car can't talk to you, so it uses other means of communication to relay messages to you such as through its sensors. The sensors on your dash can tell you if you need to get the oil changed (service engine) or if something needs to be serviced as with the check engine light. The check engine light will even blink if you need to take your ride in immediately, as it normally indicates a more serious problem. Otherwise, you still need to get your engine checked, but you don't need to go into panic mode just yet. It could even be a loose gas cap or a change in humidity that set off the sensor. But since the check engine light doesn't tell you specifically what the problem us, you do need to find out exactly what the problem is sooner than later, in case it is more serious.
