Bumper-to-Bumper vs. Powertrain Warranties

A bumper-to-bumper or comprehensive warranty generally covers most of the components from one end of the vehicle to the other. The coverage includes the engine, braking system, cooling and electronic components along with the suspension and powertrain. However, they are commonly shorter than powertrain warranties. They do not generally cover the windshield, windows, interior trim, seats or cabin surfaces.

The powertrain warranty only takes care of the powertrain, the driveshaft, velocity joints and other parts that deliver power to the wheels. The warranty does not cover the battery, the clutch, some of the drive belts or the fluids. However, the system is the largest and most costly component. Powertrain and bumper-to-bumper warranties are only offered on new or certified pre-owned vehicles and remain the most important.
