What do the Numbers on Your Tires Actually Mean?

Don't get confused with all the letters and numbers on the sidewalls of your tires. They tell you everything from type and size, to load index and speed rating. When you are looking for the size of the tire, knowing which numbers to pay attention to will save time.

The first number is the width of the tire. The three numerals following either the letter "P" (passenger), or "LT" (light truck), give you the width in millimeters. The width covers the area from one sidewall to the other. The next number, following a slash, is the height to width ratio. And finally, the third number, which follows another letter (commonly "R" for radial), is the diameter of the wheel. The diameter is measured in inches.
